Keep baby comfortable
One thing that you need to keep in mind all of the time as a photographer who is slowly venturing into the waters of newborn photography is that above all things, you should keep the baby comfortable as much as possible. Go above and out of your way to make the baby feel at home and to even make the set conducive for sleep if it is something that you will be able to pull off because at the end of the day, this is something that can potentially make your life so much easier and it will minimize any delays and any snags as you try to go ahead and proceed with your newborn photography shoot.
Try to talk to the parents as well to see if they can give out any tips regarding how you should handle the baby.
Although they’re going to be on set at some point or so, it pays if you personally know what you should be doing in the first place in case the baby acts up or something irritates him or whatnot. This is particularly crucial if you have never been a parent and know next to nothing when it comes to babies. Parents usually come along with an entire slew of baby related wisdom so if you are looking for the best resource people that you can get experience tested info from, then go right to the parents and ask for some advice.
Take note of the fact that in newborn photography, you should only be aiming for either a baby who is asleep, or a baby who is happy.
Babies who are asleep are far easier to mold and position into the positions that you would like to go ahead and put them into at the end of the day. What this technically means is that you have a little more freedom to go ahead and do what you want without any interruptions and without having to walk on eggshells all of the time when you are handling the newborn baby because he won’t even notice you when he is asleep. Make the setup conducive for sleeping as much as possible. Adjust the temperature and make sure that it is cozy and comfortable enough to get the baby to sleep. Download some lullabies ahead of time and see if you can play that in the background as well. Every little bit helps. It also won’t hurt if you have a wide assortment of soft things such as pillows and stuffed toys on set.
The happiest time of the day for babies is usually during the morning.
They have just bathed and they have just woken up from a good night’s sleep. Make sure that they are well fed as well. This way, you are able to eliminate all of the possible factors for babies to get grumpy during the newborn photography shoot. Talk to the parents ahead of time and try to see if it’s possible to arrange for a morning baby photography shoot.
